THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER
g o o s e   d r o p s
m d' s  e x p e r i m e n t a l   b e a t s

duration: 2 min 18 sec

I've been awash in heated experimentation in my creative woodshed. I've long wanted to juxtapose electronic beats/sounds with acoustic instruments, not easy ingredients to combine. But hell, that's been my intuition so I got to follow it. I sense a big project but we'll see.

As a way to release creative tension, and because it is the Fourth of July, I started to play with the melody for the U.S. national anthem, on a lark. I decided to press record before it lost its juice and this is what I got on tape -- a first take, I might add. It was a keeper.

There are some coinciding emotions -- independence from old scholarly ties, the impending preparations, labor, and birth of our little girl, and my birthday in two days. There is my renewed sense of responsibility to musical and philosophic intuitions, and to the continued emergence of a small but dedicated community of dedicated, unpretentious, integral artists. All of that is tied in some way or another to this year's 4th festivities.

Here's the scoop on materials used. I'm on my acoustic piano (with a cast on my left arm/hand). My drum machine plays a drum'n'bass beat through my a tube amplifier. The external mic of my digital recorder captures both instruments as well as the ambient space of my porch, where I record with the windows open. I added a post-production delay effect, and you can hear my speaking voice to introduce the track.

But enough words...Check it out...And then check out more of Matthew's NEW MUSIC.
